In 2001 the "I Borghi più belli d'Italia" association pulled together an official list of the most beautiful villages and small towns in Italy. It was inspired by the "plus beaux villages de France" organisation. Of these there are currently eighteen villages in Sicily that have received the 'most beautiful villages in Italy' classification.
