Visiter Favignana
L'île de Favignana fait partie du groupe des îles Égades au large de la côte ouest de la Sicile.
Bien que la pêche au thon soit depuis longtemps la principale industrie de l'île (vous ne pouvez pas manquer la grande pêcherie du port), avec l'extraction de pierre tendre locale appelée tuf (vous verrez les carrières au fur et à mesure que vous explorez), Favignana est maintenant une destination touristique populaire.
Explorer Favignana
La ville principale de l'île de Favignana est également appelée Favignana et est construite autour d'une baie et d'un port qui sont au cœur de la ville en raison de son importante tradition de pêche au thon. La baie est attrayante entourée de maisons principalement blanches avec des volets bleus et derrière celles-ci se dressent une série de collines basses.
La ville possède un centre piétonnier et est agréable à découvrir. Le bâtiment le plus frappant est le Palazzo Florio. Construit pour la riche famille Florio à la fin du XIXe siècle, il abrite aujourd'hui la mairie et l'office de tourisme.
La ville de Favignana possède également deux musées. Le musée du thon est intéressant et se trouve sur le front de mer et offre de jolies vues et quelques bâtiments et expositions intéressants. Il existe également un «musée archéologique sous-marin» qui détaille l'histoire des îles Égades.
En plus de la ville et du port de Favignana, la plupart des visiteurs viennent pour les jolis paysages côtiers, les plages et les grottes. Outre de nombreuses petites criques, il y a deux principales plages de sable sur Favignana - Cala Azzurra et Lido Burrone. Également sur la côte se trouvent plusieurs grottes que l'on peut voir depuis des bateaux exploités par les pêcheurs locaux. La grotte principale à visiter est la grotte de Saint Nicola.
Il y a aussi quelques criques rocheuses qui sont particulièrement belles. Ce sont la Cala Rosso qui est proche de la ville de Favignana et la Cala Bue Marino qui se trouve à l'extrémité orientale de l'île.
L'île se divise en deux parties distinctes - une moitié est et une moitié ouest. Il est populaire de suivre les promenades autour de l'île (celle qui suit la moitié est est recommandée si vous n'avez pas le temps de suivre les deux), de louer un vélo et de faire le tour de l'île, ou de faire une excursion en bateau qui suit autour du littoral.
Les marcheurs apprécieront la marche jusqu'au sommet du mont Sainte Catherine qui est la colline que vous pouvez voir depuis le bateau à l'approche de Favignana. Il faut environ 45 minutes pour arriver au sommet mais la vue est excellente. Malheureusement, la forteresse au sommet est négligée mais la vue en vaut la peine.
Après vos efforts, quoi d'autre qu'un déjeuner dans l'un des restaurants - assurez-vous de déguster l'un des plats de thon locaux.
L'île de Favignana est accessible en hydroptère depuis Trapanisur la côte ouest de la Sicile - durée du trajet 25 minutes.
Un moment populaire pour visiter est pendant le festival de Mattanza chaque mai. Tous les bateaux locaux ensemble posent un énorme filet et le tirent progressivement de plus en plus serré jusqu'à ce qu'il soit réduit à la soi-disant «chambre de la mort» remplie de thon battant. Ceux-ci sont harponnés et traînés sur les bateaux environnants. C'est maintenant une attraction touristique populaire, mais sachez que c'est assez brutal!

The neighbouring island of Levanzo is smaller, but also worth visiting for the beaches and for the chance to explore in tranquility the paths of the island - a popular trail is the one that leads to the top of Pizzo del Monaco. It is also rather more picturesque than it's larger neighbour.
The town of Marsala is one of the oldest in the area and has a rich historical heritage.

Explore Favignana
The main town on the island of Favignana is also called Favignana and is built around a bay and harbour which is at the heart of the town due to its important tuna fishing tradition. The bay is attractive surrounded by mostly white houses with blue shutters and rising up behind these are a series of low hills.
The town has a pedestrian centre and is pleasant to explore. The most striking building is the Palazzo Florio. It was built for the wealthy Florio family in the late 19th century but is now home to the Town Hall and tourist office.
Favignana town also has two museums. The tuna museum is particularly interesting and is on the sea front and has pretty views and some interesting buildings and exhibits. There is also an 'Underwater Archaelogical museum' which details the history of the Aegadian Islands.
As well as the town and harbour of Favignana most visitors come for the pretty coastal scenery, beaches and caves. As well as numerous small coves there are two main sandy beaches on Favignana - Cala Azzurra and Lido Burrone. Also on the coast are several caves that can be seen from boats operated by the local fishermen. The main cave to visit is the Cave of Saint Nicola.
There are also a couple of rocky coves that are particularly beautiful. These are the Cala Rosso which is close to Favignana town and the Cala Bue Marino which is at the eastern end of the island.
The island falls into two distinct parts - an eastern half and a western half. It is popular to follow the walks around the island (the one that follows the eastern half is recommended if you don't have time to follow both), to hire a bike and tour around the island, or to take a boat trip that follows around the coastline.
Walkers will enjoy the walk up to the top of Mount Saint Catherine which is the hill that you can see from the boat as you approach Favignana. It takes about 45 minutes to get to the top but the views are excellent. Sadly the fortress at the top is neglected but the views make the trip worthwhile.
After your exertions what else but a lunch in one of the restaurants - be sure to sample one of the local tuna dishes.
The island of Favignana is reached by hydrofoil from Trapani on Sicily's west coast - journey time 25 minutes.
A popular time to visit is during the Mattanza festival each May. All the local boats together lay a huge net and gradually pull it tighter and tighter until it is reduced to the so-called "chamber of death" full of thrashing tuna. These are speared and dragged onto surrounding boats". This is now a popular tourist attraction however be warned it is quite brutal!
